Abstract

The particular aspect of the fundamental problem “the formation of a national self-awareness, national and cultural identity in Russia of the second half of the XVIIIth century” is studied in the article. Among the main subjects of the analysis is literary consciousness, more exactly - the aggravated national-ideological and ethno-cultural self-reflection of D. I. Fonvizin, featured to the prominent writers of the epoch of Catherine II. His comedy “Brigadier” is regarded as the artistic argument in the controversy between D. I. Fonvizin and V. I. Lukin concerning the mechanisms and the methods of “alien” cultural texts reception and recording. The main fable motif of this comedy was represented the social-cultural situation in the post-Peter Russia. The relations between Brigadier and Ivan are considered as the model of the relations between the native and West cultures, based on the principle of the “alien” domination. Ivan’s bookish behaviour is considered by the playwright as representative for the socio-cultural situation in Russia 60s of the XVIIIth century. It’s distinctive feature was not a transplantation but a mechanical shifting of “alien” cultural behavior models to the Russian soil. The concrete indication of the first primary source of Ivan’s “dueler pose” identified author’s critical intention in relation to the phenomenon of “book imitation”, which is regulated by “Russian Parisian’s” model of behavior. By the time Fonvizin created the comedy “Brigadier” he realized the historical restriction of such “a cultural internationalism” (statement by M. M. Bakhtin) from the point of which he evaluated Lukin’s theory on “sclonenie na russkie nravy”. The offered scheme supposed that in the paradigm “adopt - understand” the second component became the overbearing.
