Abstract

The key issue of this article is the idea and the phenomenon of the Estrangement in Religious thought, especially in Christian. Author underlines the idea of the Religious Estrangement and relates it to the existential essence of a person. Author analyzes this phenomenon in the philosophy of French personalists and in Russian Christian tradition. The Religious Estrangement should be understood as the losing of deep spiritual feeling of Faith and Trusting in God. In the Religious thought this the first step of person’s Estrangement. Therefore, the Religious Estrangement leads to existential problems such as feeling of absurd, losing one’s self, loneliness and meaninglessness. On social levels, it may bring on neurosis, social apathy and other ways of deviant behavior. In the article, we consider the idea of the Engagement, which was introduced by French personalists as well. We use it in the context of overcoming the Religious Estrangement.
